Its stone walls date back to the 17th century, when Engadine traders and merchants crossed the Alps between Switzerland and Italy, bringing home new ideas, craftsmanship and an architectural style that became uniquely their own. The intricate sgraffiti
decorating the houses of Guarda — delicate designs etched into layers of plaster — remain part of this remarkable heritage today.
Behind the centuries-old walls of Chasa 32 lies a piece of Engadin history. Generations have lived here, winters have come and gone, and the village has evolved around it — yet the character of the house remains. Original details, warm wood and the quiet simplicity of its interiors tell its story without trying to recreate the past.
In 2017, Chasa 32 was carefully restored with the respect an old house deserves. Its soul was preserved: the arched ceilings, thick stone walls and reassuring solidity of a home that has stood for centuries remain beautifully intact. At the same time, everything needed for modern living was thoughtfully renewed. Underfloor heating brings warmth on crisp mountain mornings, the kitchen is fully equipped, and high-speed Wi-Fi provides contemporary comfort without compromising the character of the house.
Guarda itself feels wonderfully untouched by time. With no through traffic, its cobblestone lanes, carved wooden doors, traditional Engadine houses and sweeping views across the valley create an atmosphere of rare tranquillity.
The village is also the home of Schellen-Ursli, one of Switzerland's most beloved children's stories, and a wonderful starting point for exploring the surrounding mountains — from gentle walks through Alpine meadows to spectacular high-altitude routes towards Piz Buin (3,312 m).
